At work, we've been doing Desert Island Discs and this week is my turn. I'll be buggered if I'm writing all this lot up and not turning it into a blog post.

I win. No seriously, I win this game because I have had a theme tune written for me. Well, technically it was written for my blog, oh okay, it was inspired by the name of my blog. What? This isn't a contest and I can't win? Oh. Sorry.

According to my mother my first musical experience was dancing (or being danced, as I was baby at the time) round the room to T Rex. Was I too young to be influenced by this? Or did it somehow generate an interest in dinosaurs rather than glam rock? Lucky escape.

Adam and the Ants - Stand and Deliver

I was torn between a classic Ants track or something from his later albums. In the end memories of Saturday morning's spent watching this video on Multi-Coloured Swap Shop won the day (but if you've only heard his old material check out the 1995 album "Wonderful").

Drill Queen - Born Depressed

Justin is an information architect with whom I worked on several projects; he also played guitar for Drill Queen.

Traveling Wilburys - Tweeter and the Monkey Man

Just about the only bits of vinyl from my dad's music collection that I copied to tape, and one of the few bands that Lettice and I both love. It looks like the record label have been at YouTube so we're lucky to find this animation:

Moxy Früvous - My Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors

Moxy Früvous were a cool, funny, somewhat cheesey Canadian band who I was introduced to via two friends at university. If you saw the groaning bookshelves in our flat you'd know why this song always makes me smile.

Cerys Matthews - Oxygen

I can't sing. I really can't sing. Neither can my brother, though as churchgoer he makes up with gusto for what he lacks in aptitude. Clearly we got our singing genes from the English or Swedish parts of our family not the Welsh.

Pulp - Mis-shapes

The end of the summer of 1995. On the news it's Blur vs Oasis. But, before Blair, there was a much better third way.

Aziza Mustafa Zadeh - Ay Dilber
Stiff Little Fingers - Tin Soldiers

Hands up who wanted (or even expected) to hear some Azerbaijani Jazz today? Well, you're out of luck as I can't find it anywhere on the web. So have some classic punk instead.

Tanita Tikaram - And I Think Of You

The reason I'm here. Sort of. I created my first home page in 1995 (personal home pages, remember them? Like Facebook profiles but you had to do all the work yourself) and wanted to do a bit more. So looking around the nascent web for the various artists I liked I spotted that Tanita didn't have any fan pages dedicated to her. The resulting site helped to get me my first job at a web design agency.

Book

Assuming I'm going to be here for a while then I want something fairly long. An old favourite or something I've never gotten around to? I think I'll go for the latter and take Peter Ackroyd's London: The Biography to remind myself of home.

You Are An ISTJ
The Duty Fulfiller

You are responsible, reliable, and hardworking - you get the job done.You prefer productive hobbies, like woodworking or knitting. Quiet and serious, you are well prepared for whatever life hands you. You are conservative and down-to-earth. You hardly ever do anything crazy.

In love, you are loyal and honest. If you commit yourself to someone, then you're fully committed. For you, love is something that happens naturally. And you don't need romantic gestures to feel loved.

At work, you remember details well and are happy to take on any responsibility. You would make a great business executive, accountant, or lawyer.

How you see yourself: Decisive, stable, and dependable

When other people don't get you, they see you as: Boring, conservative, and egotistical

What's Your Personality Type?

Last time I did a Myers-Briggs based personality test I came out as ISTP, so this is the same in 3 out of 4 aspects.

Interestingly I recently took part in a team building day at work based on yet another variation on Jung's archetypes. Based on the slightly more in depth analysis (compared to an Internet meme) I came out as something that would be E*T* on the M-B system. So the only thing that everyone agrees on is that I'm Thinking rather than Feeling. Which ain't that much of a surprise

I'm in two minds about The Guardian's proposal for a London equivalent to the Ebbsfleet Horse.

On the one hand I'm all in favour of new and exciting landmarks in London.

On the other hand, it will be bloody terrifying to see this every time I look up from my desk.

The BBC ran a story today about how spammers make money. They estimated that with a click through rate of just 0.00001% it could be possible to make up to $2 million a year.

At work we deal on click through rates of double digit percentages and yet somehow don't make $200 billion a year. The downside of being all ethical and using an opt-in list. ;-)

Meanwhile I got this spam in my akismet cesspool:

Hi there!
My first post at this great blog!
I wanna show u my dayly updated blog: [adjective adjective verb noun]
Have a nice day!
BB!

P.S. if you dont want to see this message please write me to [email] with subject NO ADS and URL of your forum

Thank you for cooperation!

Allowing for the fact that 1 in 100,000 people are stupid enough to buy drugs from a spammer, how many webmasters are stupid enoiugh to send a forum URL to a spammer?

Spooks has gone all technobabble on us. Nanoparticles activated by microwaves?

But more importantly, tonight's BBC 3 episode (so on BBC 1 next Monday) was substantially filmed in our offices! And tomorrow we'll all be looking at the board room and trying to figure out how they filmed some shots (Ben, you know, the one with no personality, hiding behind a pillar) without removing a window and suspending the camera in mid air outside.

I came across a nice juicy bug in Internet Explorer today. New to me, but not to everyone else.

The short version is, if you change the useMap property of an img node then when the new map has fewer area nodes than the old one, IE will crash.

The good news is that it seems to be fixed in IE 8 beta 2. So we can stop worrying about this bug in ten years or so time...

I've been meaning to learn how to use a JavaScript library for some time. I first learnt JavaScript when it originally appeared in Netscape 2 and wasn't working with it much in the years when it was knocked into shape by some proper programmers, so a library seemed to be the best short cut to more modern coding styles.

@media 2008

Better late than never, what did I make of @media last week?

  • Number of talks that included LOL Cats: 1½
  • Number of talks that included Rick Rolling: 2
  • Number of talks that included comedy graphs: 2
  • Number of talks that included mention of Twitter being down all the time: I lost count, but at least 4

There are a few technical subjects (HTML 5, WAI ARIA, jQuery) that I hope to post more about later so here are a few impressions of each session:

Jeffrey Veen included some of my favourite charts in his talk (I have favourite charts/graphs/maps - what do you mean that you don't?). Indi Young made me think that every single project I'd ever worked on had been poorly planned. Drew McLellan says "everyone hates their CMS" and he's right. According to Stuart Langridge the fact that we use 410 responses on VisitLondon.com puts us in a very elite group. Nate Koechley explained why what I do is really very important. Richard Ishida baffled the audience with Unicode.

Good fun all round, roll on 2009.

Today [info]pink_weasel has been visiting her brother in his new flat. As said flat is in Bracknell, I declined. ;-)

Though mostly I was just too knackered from a frustrating week at work and a lack of sleep. So I stayed at home and cleared out a cupboard, played some computer games (the final cut scene in Unreal Tournament 3 reminds me of the end of Blake's 7) and chilled out.

The farmers' market in West Norwood seems to be struggling. Only six stalls this week - two meat, one veg, one bread, two pointless.

My computer runs a lot better with the case open. This probably isn't a good sign. Still, soon I'll have a Wii to play with so the damn PC will be relegated to email checking only.

A puzzle: I got a £50 cheque from YouGov. I thought I only had half that amount on my account there and as I haven't been able to log in for a few months (I've requested password resets but the email never arrives) I really don't know what's going on.

Hmph.

Visit London employs just under 100 people. So what are the odds that it employs someone who overlapped with me at Balliol and is just about to employ someone who was in the year above me at Reigate Grammar (and also employs someone who happens to be my wife)?

I met Jeremy Beadle once. He was hosting a charity quiz night that WW sent a team along to.

No one had him on their lists for this year's Deadpool game.

This morning we launched a revised version of the Visit London home page. Along with a tie up with Trip Advisor, a new Japanese site and a site for the China in London season, as well as lots of behind the scenes improvements, it's been a really packed January.

One thing that crosses over from behind the scenes to public is the addition of microformats to the site. hCard, hCalendar and hReview are all in use. Whilst hCard was straightforward to implement I found the hCalendar and hReview formats a little tricky to apply to our data. Anyway, install Operator and take Firefox for a whirl on the site and see what you find.

Rugby tomorrow. Oh yes, it's Six Nations time again.

For the second time I got an invite to do a YouGov survey, only to discover after a couple of questions that it was about the work of my employer.

Oh well. 50p is 50p and I did 'fess up in the free text answers.

I have a week off work. What shall I do with myself? Ooo, the possibilities are endless. I'll probably spend a lot of time sleeping and surfing the web.

The last two weeks or so has been busy enough even with the drawback of needing to go and be stroppy in the office every day. It all started with the work summer party at London Zoo, which didn't seem to involve eating any of the animals, but [info]pink_weasel got to molest a llama and only just failed in her mission to smuggle a penguin out with her. Last Saturday I attended a wedding where I got into a bubble blowing contest with a small child.

The weasel and I went to see Elling on Wednesday and it's every bit as good as the reviews have been saying.

And last night was the much anticipated launch party for the new visitlondon.com web site. Which I still haven't blogged about properly. Oh well.

I need a holiday. Oh good, I've got one. :-)

Consider the following code:

<form action="whatever" method="POST">
<input type="hidden" name="foo" value="a very long string" />
<input type="checkbox" name="confirm" />
<input type="submit" />
</form>

In Internet Explorer (confirmed in both 6 and 7) submitting this form with the checkbox ticked results in no response from the server. (Submitting it without the checkbox ticked just brings you back to where you started.) No problem at all in Gecko-spawn or Opera.

Anyone seen anything like that before? And better still, got a solution?

Spilling olive oil on the keyboard.
Pros: gives it that nice shiny look.
Cons: too many to mention really.

Sigh. Not a bad weekend really. Lovely weather, which I saw out the window as I was working. Got some nice JavaScript written and identified a few more IE CSS bugs that will need to be worked around. And a cracking episode of Doctor Who yesterday.

I've just watched half an episode of Hotel Babylon and I can feel my brains leaking out my ears.

Before that The Bill featured a return visit from Jim Carver. This came as a surprise to June. Why? Hasn't she read the TV guides all week? Whilst he's been away he seems to have picked up the Eastenders style of acting (you know it when you see it).

Not on tonight, but I realised on Saturday that the exterior of the Home Office in Primeval is actually the Ernst & Young building next door to VL's office.

I'm working on a new web site that will be live for the next two or three years, hence I'm keeping an eye on both versions 1.0 and 2.0 of the WCAG guidelines. One of the things that has been requested is embedded videos (similar to YouTube) within relevant pages as opposed to having a standalone video section.

Thinking about embedded video meets accessibility and looking through WCAG 2.0 I've come up with the following:

To meet Priority One guidelines

  • Provide a full text based alternative to the video, i.e. a transcript plus a label explaining, more or less, "there's a video and this is the transcript of it".
  • Provide synchronised on screen captioning replicating the dialogure and important sounds in the video.

To meet Priority Two (our goal) guidelines

  • Provide synchronised audio description (noting changes of location, identifying speakers, etc.) in the gaps in the dialogue of the video.

To meet Priority Three guidelines

  • Provide an extended audio description that pauses the video in order to create room for extra information to be relayed aurally.

Does this agree with everyone else's interpretation of the guidelines?

So, there's big project X at work, that's eating up all available time for the next few months. Them emergency Y crops up and the solution to that could easily be incorporated as part of X, but it will probably need to be fixed sooner. And then long standing problem Z raises several of its hydra headed forms at once. Gah. I just know I'm going to be in a bad mood all weekend even though I'm going to be trying hard not to think about work at all.

This afternoon we're off to see Hot Fuzz. It had better be bloody funny.
